TV 1 Forms – Camera

Camera Demo Form – AC130

Set up tripod and make sure to adjust the balance bubble.  Do not over-tighten the “knob” that locks down the head of the tripod.  This knob tightens “backwards” when the tripod is standing on its legs.  Turning left or counterclockwise will tighten the knob, not loosen it.

To attach battery:  Locate the battery opening on the right rear of the camera.  Set battery in battery slot and slide down until it clicks in place.

Removing battery:  Push grey button in while simultaneously sliding the battery up to release it.  There is an opening on the bottom side of the battery compartment where you can grasp and push up the battery while pushing the grey disconnect button..

Power switch is located on the right side of the camera, in front of the battery compartment.

To load SD card:  The SD compartment is on the back of the camera.  To open it, push down the release button and the protective cover will open to the left.  That door has a limited range of motion.  Do not try to force it beyond its range.  Load SD card by facing cut off corner of card up and contact teeth to the right.

IMPORTANT!!  SDHC cards have been formatted for you (in one of our cameras) and MUST BE RE-FORMATTED IN THE CAMERA.  Cards CANNOT be re-formatted in card readers/computers.  You can lose all of what you shoot if your card has been improperly formatted.

Flip open the retractable LCD viewfinder.  It can be rotated 180 degrees for self-portrait shooting.

White balance – White Balance switch is on the left side of the camera under the retractable LCD viewfinder.   Make sure white balance switch is set on “B”.  Zoom in on a white paper.  Push the AWB button that’s located on the left front of the camera under the lens.  “AWB Bch ACTIVE” message will appear, followed by “AWB Bch OK” message.       (If you also see “ABB Active” and “ABB End” messages, that’s okay.  You held the AWB button down too long and it also black balanced the camera.  That’s not a problem.)

Focus – Switch located on left front of camera just behind the focus and zoom rings on the camera lens.  Focus switch should be set to “M” for manual, ALWAYS.  To get the best focus for each shot, zoom all the way in on your subject, turn the focus ring to focus the shot, and then zoom out.  There are TWO Focus Assist options on the camera that can help ensure that you get a good focus.  Those are:

1) Focus Bar – at the bottom of the LCD screen…as the shot comes into focus, the bar and green box will move closer together.  The longer the bar, the sharper the shot.

2) Focus Assist – When this is switched on, you will see a red outline around objects when the focus is sharp.  Focus Assist button is on left side of the camera.

Audio – Channel 1 and 2 audio level controls are located on left side of camera to the rear.  Adjust as needed but NEVER turn all the way down.

Iris – Auto/Manual Setting in front of Gain switch.  Push button to switch between “Auto” and “Manual”.  Setting will appear in viewfinder.  Set iris to “Manual” and look at the shot.  (ALWAYS shoot in manual setting.)  Rotate the iris ring located at the back of the lens to brighten a shot or darken it if it’s “hot” (overexposed).

ND filter – located on left side of camera immediately above Focus Assist button.  ALWAYS keep this filter turned OFF, unless the camera gives you a message to turn it on.

Using the light – Always use when indoors!!  Attach the light to the top of the camera using the hot shoe mount.  Slide the light into the mount and tighten it comfortably.  Turn on the light and you’re ready to go.  When you remove the light, be sure to re-tighten the “shoe on the light so it doesn’t come un-screwed and fall off and get lost.

Using headphones – headphone jack is located under a cover that sits to the left of the battery.  To control the headphone audio level, use AUDIO MON/ADV buttons on left side of camera above audio controls.

Other settings to check before you shoot:

Scene File – dial is located on the back of the camera directly under the viewfinder. Make sure Scene File dial is set on F1.

Gain – located next to White Balance switch on left side of camera.  Keep in low setting unless you’re in VERY, VERY dark conditions, such as a dark theater or outside at NIGHT.  DO NOT use the gain to boost your light levels during the day!!!!!!!!!  This is a last resort for improving light.  Always make sure the ND filter is off, the iris is fully open and your camera light is on before boosting the gain.  A gain boost significantly affects the quality of the video – it will be extremely grainy.

Audio Settings located inside retractable LCD monitor:

Channel 1 select – Set on “Input 1”

Channel 1 – set to “Manual”

Channel 2 select – Make sure it’s set to “INT” (internal setting)

Channel 2 – set to “Manual”

Color Bars – if you see these in the viewfinder, there is a push button under the LCD panel that switches the bars on and off.  Also, check the user buttons above the LCD panel.

**Additional VERY Helpful Tip**

Use the “RECORD CHECK” button on the camera to take a quick look at what you have just shot.  The record check button is located on the right side of the camera just behind the zoom control..  After you shoot some video, stop recording, then hold down the “record check” button for a couple of seconds, then let go.  The camera will play back the last 5 seconds you shot.

If you want to look at more of what you’ve shot – the Camera/VCR switch is on the power switch.  You can put the camera in VTR mode and play back your clips.
